Current Reviews "GET-RICH-QUICK-WALLINGFORD" Grauman’s Rialto. Mr. and Mrs. George Randolph Chester’s famous Wallingford stories as arranged by George Cohan for his stage production have been screened for Cosmopolitan by Frank Borzage from Luther Reed’s scenario. Without a doubt the picture is as entertaining an offering as we have watched this year and is another laurel in the cap of its director, an artist who proves his versatility beyond the slightest shadow with this follow-up of "Humoresque." Those who have loved the original stories may feel keen disappointment in the rather untypical casting of the principals, but this will be made up for by the excellent performances which they give, the clever handling of rare situations and the general high class production which this has been given. Perfect titles, photography and an excellent scenario are among the successes of the later.
Sam Hardy, a newcomer to our screens but an admirable performer, enacts the title role with a spirit which eliminates as unfavorable the idea that his appearance has nothing in common with up we were brought up to consider the enterprising, near-crook hero. Hardy is an admirable comedian and his "grandstand’ sequences are as funny as any ever filmed. Norman Kerry also gives a good account of himself as Blackie Daw, although we had an unusually hard time reconciling him in the role after we had witnessed its interpretation by the suave George Webb, in "The Son of Wallingford." Doris Kenyon, Diana Allen and Billie Dove are only mediocre choices for the three village girls but they are inconsequential anyway. A highly enjoyable part is accomplished by Edgar Nelson, a rotund little man with a gift for very convincing transition. He plays Eddie Lamb, the credulous. However, Mac Barnes, William Hayes, Horace James, John Woodford, Eugene Keith, William Carr, William Robyns and Jerry Sinclair send them into riots of mirth as the gullible members of the Universal Carpet Tack Corporation. Each one is a clever characterizer and all are given opportunities to make use of their always-amusing "business." Mrs. Charles Willard, Theo Westman, Paterson Diel and Benny One also appear in this cinemaplay which should enjoy long runs in all large cities. (Camera Vol. 4 No. 37 pg. 5)
"A POOR RELATION" California. A greatly exaggerated but entertaining little comedy drama is Goldwyn’s latest release starring Will Rogers, "A Poor Relation." It is a Bernard McConville adaptation of Edward E. Kidder’s play and has been produced by Clarence Badger, director of many Rogers-Goldwyn pictures. While the story is never entirely real either as to content or settings, it yet possesses a lilt that pleases and should go over well with the cowboy’s fans. An excellent cast supports the star who this time appears advantageously in an impoverished but refined inventor, Noah Vale. The man’s tender care of his orphan charges and his simplicity is very sympathetic. Roger’s homely charm is really beautiful. Sylvia Breamer and Wallace MacDonald are a romantic couple to silhouette Noah’s story against, while Sydney Ainsworth and George Williams form some interesting opposition. Bobert de Vilbess and Jeanette Trebaol are cunning as Rip and Patch, two little waifs who are mothered by the naïve Scallops played by Mollie Malone. Walter Perry completes the cast. Marcel Le Picard photographed "A Poor Relation." (Camera Vol. 4 No. 37 pg. 5)
